GWAC Foundation, Inc.

In 1993, GWAC established a charitable arm – GWAC Foundation, Inc. (“the Foundation”). The Foundation received its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service in 1995. That same year, GWAC provided the Foundation with its original endowment, which it has more than tripled over the years. The work of the Foundation is performed entirely by volunteers with no paid staff.

Since 1995, the Foundation has provided funding for numerous community outreach and charitable projects. In addition to providing financial support for GWAC’s outreach efforts, the Foundation has also provided grants to support broad-based community organizations and activities, such as Safe Shores — the D.C. Children’s Advocacy Center, Dress for Success and the Northwest Family Center Therapeutic Day Camp. The Foundation provides grants to employers to provide summer intern opportunities to minority law students, as well as scholarships to deserving minority female law students to purchase school books and to graduating minority female law students to help defray the costs of taking the bar examination.

The objective of the Foundation is to empower the African-American community. This objective is accomplished through the following:

  • Fostering the education and training of African-American law students.
  • Enriching the lives of African-American children.
  • Improving the quality of life of the elderly, with a particular emphasis on African Americans.
  • Empowering the African-American community, especially the disadvantaged.

The Foundation has flourished under the capable leadership of its chairpersons Kathryn A. Ellis, Barbara E. Whiting-Wright, Sheryl L. Robinson, Gloria Sulton, Norma Brown Hutcheson, Cheryl L. Ziegler Ragland, Rashida I. Sims, and current chairperson, Alicia M. McNeal.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, and its major source of fundraising is an annual auction. It is able to continue and enhance its support of GWAC and others, as well as its own programs, through additional fundraising activities and the support of its sustaining corporate and law firm partners.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation toward GWAC Foundation, Inc.  Funds are used to support programs such as L.I.P.P., book and bar review scholarships, and community service projects.
